In an ideal world, people wouldn’t steal trailers. But these people are out there. From crimes of opportunity to professional theft rings, there are very good reasons you should put a hitch lock on a trailer. The type of lock, its resistance to breakage and its appearance are all factors to consider. Many trailer owners go for a basic, inexpensive model, operating on the theory that a thief will look for the easiest target and find one without a lock. But some of those owners have learned the hard way that a few seconds and a crowbar were all a thief needed to take their trailers.
Other trailer owners take the attitude that even the most expensive lock is a fraction of the cost of their trailer and the property inside and that makes it cheap insurance. Whichever way you go, there are some fundamentals to know. First, no lock, no matter its price or its construction, is absolutely theft-proof. Also, no lock is perfect. Each of the ones we’ve reviewed here has its pros and cons.
